Socrative seems cool so far, but not as intuitive for me as Kahoot. There are several features I really like about it, however. I love that you can print out a pdf of the quiz the students took online. Also, being able to group students based on their answers/results they gave within Socrative could come in very handy. I also like that it creates a chart with each question and codes the answers given by each student as correct/incorrect. This could potentially be a game changer when it comes to grading and forming small need-based focus groups!
I do have a few questions about Socrative, though. After I create a quiz, I don't fully understand how students will actually access the quiz and take it. Also, can I create a bunch of quizzes and exit slips ahead of time, and then just access them when I need them? Or do they become live as soon as I've completed them? Somehow, I both the quiz and exit slip became "live" immediately after I created them. Not quite sure how that happened..... does this automatically happen, or did I click something? Also, could this tool be used to have students take a quiz outside of class, like at home? If so, how does that work? The same way that they'd access a quiz in class? Does the room code change for every quiz, or is it always the same? How do I let students know what the code is for the quiz (especially if I want them to take it outside of class)?
So, all in all, I think Kahoot ans Socrative will be fun and engaging ways to assess my students this upcoming year. Hopefully, they'll also save me some grading time - after I explore and understand Socrative a bit more...
To access the student version of the Socrative quiz, go here: https://b.socrative.com/login/student/
The room code is: RKQRYRND
If you want a copy of it: SOC-16915906
Hi Jen! I teach Spanish too and I've never used Kahoot with my Spanish class before! I like how you said you were able to edit the quiz for your students. I also didn't know that was a possibility before. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that you found some Kahoots and modified them for yourself. Kahoots made by other teachers that you can copy then modify is one of my favorite features of Kahoot. There is a lot of good stuff out there but I almost always make some changes to make them better (at least I think they are better when I am done).
ReplyDeletePrinting off a quiz for a Kahoot is a nice feature. If you were having your students take a Kahoot at home you could create printouts for students who don't have access or if you have a student who needs a non-computer accommodation you can use this feature.
To answer your questions about Socrative:
-After you have created a quiz, you click on the dashboard then choose the quiz you want which will bring you to a page where you can set up your quiz for how you want your students to take it. Once this is set up it is ready to go. Students go to the student login page and enter your room number which will take them to this quiz. You can only have one quiz running at a time in your room.
-Yes, you can create a bunch ahead of time and access them when you are ready. Socrative stores your quizzes in their system so they are ready to go.
-I don't know how they would have become live after you created them, you have to go through the process of starting a quiz for them to be turned on and only 1 can be on at a time.
-You could have students take a quiz outside of class. You need to choose one of the student led options when you start your quiz. Once a quiz is started it will run until you log in and stop it so if you assign one for homework, it will run until you stop it the next day.
-The room code is the same for every quiz which is why you can only have one quiz live at a time. This way, your students only have to remember one code. Also, you can use classroom to help your students get to the log-in page and you can put the Socrative room code in classroom also so they will havce access to it to start their quiz.
